Not sure when Wednesday started becoming my long slow run days (like last week’s), but it happened again today.
I wanted to run the entire Los Gatos Creek Trail (at least the paved portion) to see how long it was.
Started out in the middle and did one out-and-back toward Campbell, and then toward Los Gatos for another out-and-back to end back in the middlish.
At first, I was going to go for a 9:30 pace for the whole run. It was 11:30am when I started and it was just going to get hotter and hotter as the day went.
Well, after the first few miles, I settled into a 9:15 pace, so I decided to just stick with that.
I haven’t done a run like this in a while, so I forgot to bring more GU with me. I luckily found one in my car. Wouldn’t have been a very enjoyable second half without it.
Near the end of the run, I didn’t really feel like doing just 9:15 pace because I wanted it to be over with, so I sped up a tiny bit. 8:29 for the last mile. I felt super thirsty and all, but I could have done another two or three miles if I really needed to.
Good thing I didn’t need to do 20. In fact, I didn’t need to do 17, haha. I just felt like being out there on the road for a long time, thinking and praying and sweating. [Also did a 0.35 speedwalk as a cooldown. I think that speedwalking felt harder than the actual run, hahaha].
I chose a speed that was slow so that I wouldn’t feel too depleted or crummy at the end of it. The only thing that kind of made me feel like crud was the heat (I’m glad there are a fair number of water fountains on the trail)… but after I got home and drank down a huge protein smoothie, I felt marvelous!
What went into the smoothie: ice, water, orange juice, half a banana, 3/4 cup blueberries, and one big scoop of vanilla protein powder. That thing was gone in 60 seconds, yo.
[BTW, my mom came and offered me a piece of marinated beef right when I came home from this run and I couldn't even smell it. For some reason, that seemed really unappetizing after a long run.]
What made today’s run a bit hard was the fact that yesterday was NOT a rest day.
I did 6.5 miles on the treadmill (53 minutes) and 60 minutes in a Cycle class. That cycling class made me sweat so much that it looked like I went swimming in their pool with my workout clothes on. Extremely sexy to walk about of there with my shorts sticking to my thighs, leaving a trail of sweat behind me.
[BTW, I will do one of those mini triathlons one day... it seems fun and incredibly challenging. I will also do at least one ultra (I guess a 50K) in my lifetime... God-willing, of course]
Are all your runs scheduled/planned/structured? Or is it a day-to-day kind of thing?
Time for you to impress me… who has done a triathlon (sprint/mini/half/Ironman)?
